The city of Mesquite has exciting news! The city is building six public outdoor courts across the street from the Mesquite Recreation Center. The courts are being modeled after Little Valley in St. George Utah, and are expected to be completed in June.

At last week’s Happy Trails tournament, co-district ambassador Steve Carter passed his referee on-site evaluation to became the district’s first certified referee. With Steve’s certification, the ambassadors are now working on a referee training program that can lead to the trainee being certified if they wish. More information will be published in an upcoming newsletter as well as on this website.

On Thursday night, January 12, Lake Las Vegas Sport Club hosted an open house to introduce its residents to pickleball. With a combination of permanent courts and double-striped tennis courts a big crowd turned up to learn more about the sport. Local ambassadors Mario Najera, Geri Grodzinsky, and Lisa Carter were on-hand to show the new picklers how much fun it is. A repeat session was held on Saturday morning, January 14, again to packed courts. Many of the same people came out on Saturday to practice their shots and learn more about play.

On January 9-11, tournament directors Mario Najera and Geri Grodzinsky hosted the first annual Bally’s Round Robin at the newly renovated pickleball courts at the Bally’s Hotel & Casino. The format was hugely popular since each team got to play many games instead of the 2 and out that happens in a standard tournament. The tournament also included a pizza party on Monday afternoon which was great after a long day of pickleball! Thanks Mario and Geri for hosting such a fun tournament!!

On Sunday, January 7, IPTPA-certified pickleball instructor Mario Najera hosted an “Introduction to Pickleball” class at the Plaza Hotel pickleball complex. The session was attended by 5 students who were eager to learn more about the sport. If you’d like to join an “Introduction to Pickleball” session please join the Southern Nevada Meetup group so you’ll know about upcoming sessions.

On Saturday, January 7, the Las Vegas pickleball league got off to a great start. Despite the sleet, rain, and very cold weather, 16 teams played across the Las Vegas metro area. Pictured are the Bally’s “Lobsters”. The league runs through the end of February. To see all the league pictures, check out Annielynn’s pictures at To s
