USAPA certified referee, Steve Carter, hosted the 1st referee training class in Las Vegas. This class series enables attendees to become a USAPA-certified referee should they choose to complete the requirements. And if not, it still prepares them to be awesome referees!

18 referees in training attended the 3-hour classroom session then many stayed and practiced their new skills at the Plaza Hotel’s pickleball courts. Great job everyone!

Recently we completed our first regular season of the Las Vegas Pickleball League, the Largest Pickleball League in the world, hosting the biggest kick-off event ever with sixteen teams at six different venues. Siena had the best record at 6-1. Final results of the league are listed on the website.

None of this was possible without a small army of workers and volunteers, including:

* The Las Vegas Pickleball League team captains
* The Merit Sportsmanship Award winners (listed on the website)
* The USAPA.ORG and Local Ambassadors
* The City of Henderson and Las Vegas Parks and Recreation Departments
* The Plaza, Bally’s, Darling Tennis Center and Sun City communities

As stated on the league website, the National Pickleball League Championship, originally planned for April, is being rescheduled for December, 2017 because teams had conflicts with Easter weekend. A separate notice on the December event will be sent out shortly.

As always, the goal of the League is to provide fun, competitive, and social Pickleball play for all ages and skill levels. So if you love to play Pickleball and want to socialize with other Pickleball enthusiasts, start or join a Pickleball league. Ultimately, leagues will help contribute to the exponential grow of Pickleball across the country and around the world. – contributed by Rick Johnson

Well, it was a little disappointing, wasn’t it? The weather didn’t cooperate once again with what would have been the biggest and most successful Pickleball event for the LVCC. We were all looking forward to the expanded format being played on the 12 beautiful courts at the Plaza Hotel.

In spite of the horrid high winds, there was still a lot of laughter. So, I’m hoping most of you had fun. Naturally, I’m always interested in feedback to see how we can make it better in years to come. Maybe we should be considering taking the event indoors (Ha!) or scheduling it during more settled weather conditions.

I feel very confident in saying that the Plaza Hotel is truly unique in being the only Hotel in the world with dedicated Pickleball courts – contributed by John Sloan
